A Call To Wellness

Come learn about therapies that have been found to help reduce fear and anxiety, enhance the immune system, manage side effects of chemotherapy, aid in post-operative recovery and promote deep relaxation.

 I had a great time presenting at the Call to Wellness!  It was exciting for me to  meet so many people looking for ways to incorporate ideas on healthy living.  I discussed the many factors that contribute to increasing or decreasing our energy with the foods we eat.

I promised to share with you one of the most powerful grains we should be eating today.  Its called “Quinoa” pronounced keen-wah. 

Summary of the Super Grain “Quinoa”

Protein: a complete source!

Other nutrients: high in calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper and phosphorous and  its alkalizing

Health Benefits:

  • when cooking with spinach, it becomes a great source of iron
  • for heart patients: this grain can be very beneficial as it helps dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow and circulation not only to the brain, but also to other parts of the body (such as the heart, which is also why Quinoa is an excellent food to prevent cardiovascular disease
  • antioxidants -  act as cell guardians and can help reduce the look of aging, contributes to excellent skin (along with the Vitamin E within it) and can even help prevent diseases such as cancer
  • does not contain gluten, which makes them easily digestible, and suitable for celiacs, who are gluten-intolerant.

Jane’ Basic Quinoa Recipe

1 cup of quinoa

2 cups water

dash of salt

Rinse: prior to cooking, rinse the grain in a small strainer, with cold water until the water runs clear.

Pre-soak: (optional) when you soak this grain you improve their digestibility and increase their nutritional value.

Cook: done in 20 minutes

Pan/Pots: use a stainless steel pan not Teflon coated

Fluff:  many grains benefit from fluffing.  When grains are done cooking, remove from heat and gently lift and separate with a fork .
